We hear there are more than 40 characters in this play! How many are you playing?

Lucky 7

Which of the characters you’re playing is your favorite? Tell us a little bit about that character.

I know you probably won’t believe me when I say that I don’t have a favorite, but it’s actually completely true. Or maybe it’s more accurate to say that every character is my favorite while I’m working on him or her. I do have a soft spot for Villeroi — an ancient, deaf, glad-handing politician who is not shy at all about sharing the quality of his recent BMs. It’s not often that I get to play old men, but I get to do it a couple of times in this play. Maybe it’s my new niche.

What are you most excited for the audience to experience when they come to The Improbable Fall, Rise & Fall of John Law?

Playwright Matt Herzfeld has written an incredibly intelligent script which doesn’t sacrifice any laughs. The show has such a broad, historical scope — we span decades of time and the English Channel in two hours, and we do it in an intimate space, which I think will be a lot of fun for the audience. But besides being fun, the story is also rooted in historical truth, so the audience is going to be learning something while they are entertained. Right now, we’re on the cusp of a new financial frontier where I feel like the nature of money is more fluid than it’s ever been — people carrying cash is rare, and often, the money you have is solely represented by a number you see on your computer screen or smartphone. To see in this play what money once was, and to think about what it is now and what it may be in the future is amazing to me!

If you became a millionaire overnight what would you do with your newfound wealth (besides donating generously to your favorite non-profit theatre company, of course)?

Pay off my student debt. Let’s be honest, a million dollars is not even really that much. I might invest in some New York real estate and pray that I had a little bit left over to go out for beers and oysters after the down payment.

What’s your take on John Law (or at least Matt’s version of John Law) – hero, villain, or somewhere in between?

In the part of the play we’re staging here, I have to say that I think John Law is more of a hero than anything else. I admire his drive and singular devotion to his vision. Also, I think he’s got to be acknowledged as a genius in some respect because his ideas of trade and money were pretty much non-existent at the time. It takes a great mind to create something out of nothing. I also play Katherine, John’s wife. She is his biggest fan and supporter, so that may be why all my feelings about John are so positive.
