The Dreamscape Theatre presents "The Burning Cities Project", a collection of short performances centered on the theme of individual reactions to incidents of mass destruction, as part of the 10th annual New York International Fringe Festival—FringeNYC. This theatrical collage weaves together short-form drama, monologues, spoken word, comedy and dance created by a diverse ensemble of actors, writers, directors and choreographers from around the world.
The pieces that make up "The Burning Cities Project" address a variety of incidents from the bombing of Hiroshima to Hurricane Katrina, from September 11th to the destruction of Pompeii. The vignettes are tied together by a series of monologues based upon transcribed interviews with the ensemble about their own personal disaster experiences. How do people come to terms with massive catastrophes? What experiences link people who have watched their cities burn?
Co-created by ten writers, directors, actors and choreographers including FringeNYC alums: Ricardo Pérez-Gonzalez (FringeNYC 2005; Johnny Got His Gun: "…the nuance and texture he brings to this immensely difficult part is extraordinary"— NYTheatre.com); Mark Lindberg (FringeNYC 2005; Johnny Got His Gun); and Laura Moss (FringeNYC 2003; director, Diagnosis Jew Pain: "captivating…distinctive… entertaining" – NYTheatre.com) as well as Emma Canalese (lead actress in the film Thursday's Fiction, winner of the Gold Medal for Excellence at the Park City Film Music Festival), David McGee (Asst. dir. of Will Power’s The Seven at New York Theater Workshop, Jo Bonney, dir., “frisky and funny”—The New York Times), Morgan Anne Zipf (Olivia in The Legitimate Theater Company’s Twelfth Night: The Drinking Game, “Innovative… bawdy… fun”—Off-Off Online; Asst. dir. of David Mamet’s world premiere one-act Bone China, Ensemble Studio Theatre), Brad Raimondo, Eve Gibson, Danielle Monica Long & Sarah Worrest. The cast includes Molly Pope (Machinal, The Dreamscape Theatre, “Molly Pope does a formidable job with this difficult role… compelling.”—Off-Off Online), Danelle Eliav and Alexus Robertson; directed by Jennifer McGrath.
Now entering its fifth year, The Dreamscape Theatre is a New York-based non-profit company dedicated to supporting the work of young and emerging directors. Led by Co-Founder/Producing Artistic Director Brad Raimondo, General Manager Zack Calhoon and Head of Production Morgan Anne Zipf, Dreamscape pursues this mission by presenting world premiere, contemporary and classic plays, as well as commissioning new works, all featuring the talents of some of New York's most exciting emerging directors. Dreamscape has produced ten separate projects, including a touring production of the contemporary South African classic WOZA ALBERT! (directed by Jennifer McGrath) which was seen by over 2,000 high school students in New York and New Jersey. Dreamscape's 2005 "Season on The Edge" ran for four weeks at Manhattan Theatre Source, playing before sold-out houses and featuring a critically acclaimed revival of Hamlet which NYTheatre.com called "engrossing," "smart" and "excellent." "The Burning Cities Project" is the third world premiere and the first FringeNYC project presented by Dreamscape.
